Winter vacation at Lake Wolfgangsee Insider tip away from the winter hustle and bustle
A small, family-friendly ski area and fantastic cross-country ski trails await you on the Postalm in Strobl. The surrounding peaks can be reached on snowshoes and touring skis. In snowy winters, there is also a cross-country ski trail in the valley from Abersee to Strobl, with some fantastic views of Lake Wolfgangsee. A special experience is an ice-skating trip on the frozen Wolfgangsee. This is not possible every year, but the chances are best at the end of January and beginning of February.
Those who prefer a more leisurely approach can take a horse-drawn carriage ride or take advantage of the wellness offers on the lake.
You canexperience living traditions during the Wolfgangsee Advent or welcome in the New Year with the bell ringers in the first week of January.

3 things you should definitely do at Lake Wolfgangsee 1. consciously experience a sunrise or sunset by the lake
You shouldn't miss these moments when the first or last rays of sunshine of the day are reflected in the lake. You can enjoy the most beautiful sunrises while relaxing on the lakeside promenade in St. Gilgen, or after a short morning hike up the Plombergstein or the Weißwand. For late risers, we recommend the sunsets with a glass of wine on the lakeside pro menade in Strobl, after a long day of swimming in Fürberg, or from the Vormauerstein in St. Wolfgang.

2. enjoy fish specialties from local waters
Fish from Lake Wolfgangsee is an unadulterated natural product that you can enjoy nowhere fresher than in one of the numerous restaurants around Lake Wolfgangsee. It is mainly trout, Arctic char, whitefish and pike that can be found on the menus and cater to a wide variety of culinary preferences. Whether classically smoked, grilled or fried, as Steckerlfisch for the small appetite in between or quite unconventionally as Seesushi. It's best to ask your hosts for a restaurant tip!

3. let your gaze wander from the summit of the Schafberg
At 1,782 meters, the Schafberg is not quite the highest peak in the region, but it is certainly the most popular. You can either take the cog railroad from St. Wolfgang to the top in a relaxed manner, or hike up on your own via one of the numerous hiking trails that lead to the summit from all directions in 2 to 4 hours. 14 lakes can be seen from the Schafbergspitze, from the Salzkammergut lakes to Lake Chiemsee. You also have a good view of the mountains here: from the Dachstein massif to the Bischofsmütze and the Watzmann, you can let your gaze wander.
