A holiday in Austria – a holiday at a winery

Mörbisch am See is a very small community on Lake Neusiedl in northern Burgenland with a mere 2,300 inhabitants, and is only 50 minutes away from my home. In my opinion, the idyllic little spot is the perfect starting point for a holiday in the Neusiedler See region.
 
While I was at school, trips to the lake were a common occurrence. Each year, we visited the region and all of its sights, such as the national park, Esterházy Palace, numerous wineries, and of course the old Hofgassen in Mörbisch, and we learned a lot about our home region. We first crossed the lake from Illmitz to Mörbisch when we were in kindergarten. And it’s for exactly this reason that this cooperation with Urlaub am Bauernhof and Urlaub am Winzerhof is so important to me! This is my home. The region I came to know and love in my early years. Even though I love stepping on a plane to travel to the other side of the world to stay in grand, luxurious hotels, I love my home country just as much. This is where my roots are.
 
As my blog contains far too few posts about my wonderful home, I will tell you a little about it today!

Our accommodation: Schindler Vineyard

During our research trip, we stayed at Schindler vineyard, and have no reservations whatsoever about endorsing the experience. As their website shows, the estate is a place ‘to enjoy with all the senses and to simply leave the daily grind far behind. Here, you can take the time to switch off and relax in a stylish ambience.’ And they’re really onto something there!
 
A holiday at a winery certainly has its benefits! Wonderfully situated at the midst of the mountainside vineyards, you can go on great lake tours by bike or walking trails from the holiday home, and in the an evening you can ring out the day with a lovely glass of wine. Thanks to the familial atmosphere, we felt right at home. We were offered a glass of grape juice or wine as we were welcomed in the arcade courtyard, surrounded by fragrant oleander, and then began a tour of the vineyards of Mörbisch. We were told all about the grapevines, the current vintage, and how to care for a vineyard. Of course, we were shown all the different types of grape, and were allowed to taste them as well! This meant we were well prepared for the wine tasting in the Schindler family’s own wine cellar – more on that later.
 
The winery has 15 rooms and suites in total, all of which are designed in a cosy country farmhouse style. The thing we found most intriguing was that each room was named after a type of wine or wine region! The lavish winery breakfast buffet was largely composed of the numerous regional delicacies, including local types of sausage, a variety of cheeses, and local, home-made spreads. Everything was truly made with love, and the lady of the house and her mother-in-law were highly attentive hosts. Oh, I almost forgot! As we were leaving, we were given a souvenir photo of our stay in a Schindler vineyard brochure. We thought it was a lovely, personal gesture!

If you go on holiday to a winery, you will certainly want to get acquainted with the house wine and experience it for yourself! So a wine tasting and a tour of the vineyard and wine cellar should not be missing on your to-do list! We found it fascinating to learn more about how wine is made and trace the wine back to its roots. In my home community, we specialise in the cultivation and processing of apricots, which is why I’m familiar with how schnapps is made, but not wine. So, for me, it was something new and really interesting to take a look behind the scenes to learn something about wine production.

During the tour of the vineyard, Harald Schindler explained all about viticulture. Climate and good soil are natural prerequisites for growing grapes. Throughout the entire year, a vineyard needs intensive care, as the vines must be trimmed and pruned, and of course, the soil needs to be well fertilised. However, the work always starts with cutting the vines. This essential work is carried out in winter. After that, it’s time for maintenance work and tensioning the wires in the vineyard. And of course, come spring, the leaves must be pruned. The land needs to be weeded and fertilised, and the yield must be controlled. And with the grape harvest in September and October, it’s into the wellies and the fruits can be picked. The production of wine is therefore a very long and laborious process.

Visiting Gut Zentgraf

Grape juice is lovely, but it should be enjoyed with food! That’s why we also visited the lovely Bettina’s garden of rare plants. She is the owner, passionate cook, and gardener at Gut Zentgraf – also in Mörbisch am See. Together, we picked ripe rare plants in the fruit and vegetable garden, including Mexican mini cucumbers (melothria), bell peppers, mini cherry tomatoes, and yellow raspberries. We also conjured up a delicious spread made of leeks, herbs and nuts for our picnic at Lake Neusiedl. The area around the lake is also home to many local taverns. Here, they also serve the typical Burgenland Brettljausen lunch with bacon, sausage, cheese, various spreads and salad. It’s traditionally accompanied by a “Heurige” (a bottle of the current wine vintage).

A holiday at a winery is not just for adults and wine-lovers, but also for all those who are looking for a nice break from their hectic day-to-day lives and wish to enjoy the peace and quiet of the countryside, which is combined with culinary highlights and a jam-packed programme of recreational activities. A big thank you to the Schinder and Zentgraf families for the lovely few days. We once again realised how lovely a holiday at home in Austria can be!
