The region certainly lives up to its name. Home to over 13,000 hectares of vineyards, Weinviertel is Austria’s most expansive winegrowing area and famous for its picturesque alleyways lined with cellars. It is hardly surprising that the selection of grape varieties is as large as the region itself, but the typical Green Veltliner is the most frequent of all. Visitors to the vineyard city of Retz can explore over 20 km of wine cellars, while the gently rolling hills of the Weinviertel district are themselves inviting places for a bicycle tour. A particular highlight is “Dining in the Weinviertel”, where leading chefs prepare multiple courses of delicacies that are served at the heart of the vineyards themselves.
