Once known as the winegrowing region of Donauland, the area was renamed the Wagram Wine Road as recently as 2007. The Wagram is actually a 30 km plateau that rises above the northern side of the Danube to the east of Krems. The quaint wine towns of the Tulln Basin are dotted around to the south of the river, while the Wine Road winds its way to the historical vineyard city of Klosterneuburg just outside Vienna. Besides Green Veltliners with a peppery tang, Wagram is also known for its characterful red wines and delicately aromatic Frühroter Veltliner, a typical local variety.
